I grew up in the suburbs, so even domesticated farmyard animals seem exotic to me, like this bantam rooster and Red Angus cow with her calf that I encountered last weekend in Montpelier, Virginia while I was out of town for a wedding.
I am also including an image of an American Robin (Turdus migratorius) that I also captured on the farm—I like the way that the color of the rusted barbs matches that of the robin’s breast and how their shape mirrors that of the robin’s clawed feet.
“That rooster is stretching his neck to say cock-a-doodle-do.” Benjamin knows this from one of his books about farm animals. He would like to pet the baby calf because “it is so cute.” Benjamin has become quite interested in Robins this Spring. He loves watching them pulling up worms in the yard, especially when it rains. “I love your Robin’s orange feathers. I think he is looking for a worm to eat, Robins love worms!” We loved your photos. Thank-you, Mr. Mike!!
In fact, the rooster was crowing quite loudly when I took the shot. It strikes me that Benjamin is amazingly observant. I think he sees things that many adults wouldn’t even notice.
Cows are wonderful, and I never can get enough of robins. This is a splendid portrait, and a good capture of the eye ring.
Lovely photos, Mike!
Nice composition on the Robin image!
Thanks, Ellen.
Nice shots, Mike, they bring a smile to my face.
I love that robin portrait for precisely the reason you stated. I am a fan of rust anyway (not on my car maybe, but as an aesthetic element) but I love the way the rust on the barbed wire fence emphasises the breast feathers of the bird. Chickens would be a fun subject for a photo series. They are more placid and less skittish than most birds, of course, but they also have such amazing diversity.
Now you make me want to go and capture the ones that now run through my neighborhood first in photo then in watercolor 🙂 Gorgeous shot! How do you like Cannon? Maybe I will rent one and see how it does for my type of photography.Your shots are always stella I am draw to real 🙂
I happen to use a Canon, but there are lots of good cameras out there and I am sure that you can find one that fits your needs and budget. I have gotten some materials and may try to dabble a little with watercolor–I love the look that watercolor gives.
Awesome can not wait to see your use of them 🙂
Such gorgeous color! I love all of these images.
