Last Friday morning at Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge, I spotted a Bald Eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) in a distant tree further down the trail. I decided to try to sneak closer to the eagle, hoping it would not see me through the tangle of branches separating us.
When I got close enough for a mostly unobstructed shot, I focused on the eagle and realized it was glaring down right at me with what looked to be disapproval. A few seconds later the eagle took off and disappeared from sight.
Sneaking up on an eagle? I am not sure that it can be done—the eagle’s superior sight and reaction time seem to win out every single time.

Nice Mike! One of my favorite birds to photograph!
Fabulous portrait. I don’t know that I’d feel too comfortable being glared at by an eagle.
Benjamin says : “That is a humongous beak! He looks cross too!” I agree that this magnificent Eagle does appear a bit disgruntled. We both say Thank-you, Mr. Mike.
Can you remind me how old Banjamin is–it is so cool that you are able to share nature with him and I am always glad to hear he enjoys my photos. I can’t wait to see how he reacts to my summer photos with snakes and frogs and dragonflies and spiders.
Benjamin turned 4 years old this January. He will be very, very excited with your summer photos. He is fascinated by your many photos and we always talk about what you have written. We also discuss what he wants to tell you. Your posts are a great learning experience for both of us, one is never to young or to old to learn. P.S. I usually end a comment from both of us with Thank-you x 2. This morning Benjamin told me that I should say Thank-you, Mr. Mike.
Such a magnificent bird! Great photos, Mike.
Fabulous!
Spectacular!
