This eagle’s nest is nestled back in the trees at Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge, somewhat obstructed though still visible from the trail. When I first sighted the nest this past Saturday morning, it looked like it was empty. I kept my eyes glued to the nest as I slowly walked past it and suddenly I spotted a Bald Eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) sitting on the nest, partially hidden in the shadow of the trees. This is the second nest at the refuge that I have spotted so far this winter that appears to be in use, though I suspect that there may be more. When leaves return to the trees, I fear that the nest will be completely hidden from view, which will give the eagles a little more privacy from paparazzi like me.

See? There are some advantages to winter: namely, the ability to peer into nests, and to see those flitty little birds in their bushes. Very nice photo. I do enjoy seeing birds in their nests.
Thanks. In many ways I prefer the winter, when it comes to spotting birds. Unlike some experienced birders, who can locate birds by their sounds, I generally need some movement to be able to do so, When there are leaves on the trees, I usually give up on birds and return to insects, especially dragonflies.
What a massive nest! Nice work observing and then spotting the Eagle.
It is always fun to find an Eagle’s nest! Plus fun to photograph the activity. Luckily most of the time the nests are usually far enough away they do not get disturbed by photographers annoying them. But still be able to photograph the coming & going activity. I also agree about dragonfly photography!
Wow! Great photo, Mike! You have an “eagle eye” to spot this beauty in such a big nest. 😃
