As I was walking along the Potomac River one day last month, I came upon this large toad, which I think might be a Fowler’s Toad (Anaxyrus fowleri). I was really struck by the way that the light and shadows helped to emphasize the very bumpy texture of the toad’s skin.

I agree that the light really “makes” this photo. It actually looks like it might be bathing in moonlight: very mysterious, and compelling.
Thanks. The pathway that I was walking on was shaded and in the one spot where the toad was located, the light shown through like a mini-spotlight.
The lighting is indeed perfect in highlighting the texture of the toad’s skin.
