Greens for breakfast? It’s not what I would choose, but it’s what was on the menu for an Eastern Gray Squirrel early this morning at Huntley Meadows Park. The squirrel paused for only a second, so I didn’t have much time to frame the shot. I like the result and this was a rare occasion when I did not need to crop the image at all.
As for my breakfast choices, I think I will stick with my usual oatmeal.

I love these guys, Mike. This is a great shot.
Thanks, Dan. I tend to be an equal-opportunity photographers–I will take photos of almost anything that catches my eye, even everyday creatures like this squirrel.
I love squirrel and this one made me smile. You gotta eat your greens! Fun shot, Mike!
Thanks, Chris. I never know what I will stumble upon and try to be ready. When I took the shot, I had no idea what the squirrel had in its mouth. If I had had a little more time to react, I suppose I would have zoomed out, but in many ways the shot is more effective zoomed in tight like this.
Fantastic shot!
Thanks. I was a point and shoot opportunity and turned out even better than I anticipated.
Indeed!!
There was a posting on face book of a squirrel with a whole taco shell in the tree. Perhaps this squirrel saw it and was bringing the greens.
I love this picture! As others mentioned, it made me grin. He looks very focused on getting the greens and seeds to the breakfast table
It the photo put a smile on your face, I accomplished my goal. While it’s cool to shoot strange and exotic creatures, there is something I really enjoy about highlighting the everyday ones.
Nice! What lens did you use Mike?
I was using my Tamron 150-600mm lens on my Canon 50D. I am pretty sure that the lens was zoomed out to max, which is where I do a lot of my shots.
Wow! Yes 600mm sounds great. Just a bit too heavy for us to carry! Thanks.
The Tamron telephoto zoom lens is at the limit of what I can comfortably shoot with handheld, though I admit that it does get a bit heavy by the end of a long day.
