A bright red male Northern Cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis) was buried in the bushes on Monday at Huntley Meadows Park. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t get an unobstructed shot. I attempted to will the cardinal to move to a new spot and amazingly it flew to a perch on the upper railing of the observation deck and posed for me.

I love cardinals at any time of year. It’s that cartoonish bird shape, the bright red, and the tuft of the head that appeal to me. I do feel though that in winter cardinals looks even more splendid and I think your portraits highlight that as the red looks even more glorious against the cold, dun background. I’m actually painting cardinals with my preschool class today. I should show them your photos as inspiration.
Feel free to share the photos, Laura. I love the fact that cardinals, unlike many other colorful birds, stay with us all winter. I too love their shapes and find it amusing that the tuft seems to be smoothed down in one of the images.
Thanks, Mike. I would only be showing them the images on your blog post via my phone, not printing them off or anything.
Such a handsome bird.
🙂 . Totally agree.
An interesting pose in that last shot Mike.
Lovely work 🙂
