Butterflies are always beautiful no matter what their condition, but there is something really special about seeing a perfect specimen with its wings wide open, like this Eastern Tiger Swallowtail (Papilio glaucus) that I spotted this past weekend at Green Spring Gardens.

This is perfect, Mike. The colours of the butterfly and the different shades of green in the background work so beautifully together. This has to be one of the best Swallowtail photos I have seen here, if not the best. This deserves a nice frame and a good spot on the wall.

It’s so rewarding to find an un-tattered and -torn specimen so late in the season. This is a real beauty. Kind of makes one wonder, though–is this a wallflower, hesitant to really engage in adventure? Whatever, lovely shot!
Fascinating speculation, Gary. How is it that this one managed to remain so pristine. When I was growing up I had similar questions when I would see a kid with pure white sneakers. How did he manage to keep them so clean when mine never remained white for very long?
Wonderful!
