A Green Heron (Butorides virescens) was perched this morning on the raised edge of the boardwalk at Huntley Meadows Park, peering down into the murky water. Apparently the heron didn’t like what it saw, for it turned abruptly and decided to cross the boardwalk. I captured this shot as the heron was taking its first tentative step in the new direction.

A very nice off-balance catch. It seems to have a look of intense concentration as if it just knows that there’s something highly desirable just beyond the other side of that boardwalk.
Great action shot!
Excellent!
Funny pose. Good catch, and a very sharp image. Nice!
Thanks, Sue. I did get some shots of this green heron in more natural surroundings, but this image was so much fun that I couldn’t resist posting it first.
They are such delightful birds. Since I see them daily around the marinas, I always enjoy shots with that kind of background. They’re so adaptable, and they’ve made plenty of human environments their home — there’s nothing really “unnatural” about seeing them around boats and people.
Interesting perspective about what is “normal”–I guess it is all relative.
Fantastic shot Mike !
Thanks, Helen. The timing was a bit lucky for the shot, but it turned out just as I hoped it might.
