Necrophila americana—what a creepy Latin name for this beetle, known in English as the American Carrion Beetle, that feeds on dead and decaying flesh. Fortunately the backdrop was more pleasant for this specimen that I spotted on Monday in one of the fields at Huntley Meadows Park.

I have only ever seen them on the ground. Great shot.
Thanks, Victor. I have no idea why this one was in the vegetation. At the time I took the shot, I only knew that it was an interesting looking beetle.
How odd, to find it on a leaf. But great shot for this guy (or gal).
Funky beetle. I will need to keep a look out for those. The kids and I love beetles.
Never seen one of these before. Interesting texture!
That’s a strange one, but easy to identify I would think.
It wasn’t hard to find at all. I had no idea what it was when I took the shot, but its colors and pattern are distinctive.
