At this time of the year I love seeing irises growing in the wild at Huntley Meadows Park. I think these all are Blue Flag Irises (Iris versicolor), though I am not absolutely certain of this identification. These irises are not as big and showy as the ones growing in my neighbors’ gardens, but I find them to be equally beautiful.

Those are beautiful Mike!
Thanks, Dan.
They’re known as flags in rural Texas, and you’ll hear people talk about the “flag pond” from time to time. For many years, I thought a flag pond was one where a flagpole had been erected. Oops! My mistake!
Someone made a similar comment when I posted a photo in Facebook. I grew up in Massachusetts and I am pretty sure I never heard them referred to as “flags.” 🙂
They do look like Iris versicolor. They’re beautiful things which we’ll see in about 2 weeks or so.
Thanks, Allen, for help with the identification. We’ve had them in bloom already for a week or two. As usual, we seem to be about a month or so ahead of you in terms of flowers and insects.
