Against the wind, this Green Heron (Butorides virescens) looked like it was facing into a strong headwind and running against the wind early Monday morning at Huntley Meadows Park. In fact, the air was calm and the wind-blown, tousled look was merely a grooming choice by the heron as it prepared for the new day.

Some herons have beautiful colors and textures in their feathers and this looks like one of them.
Great shot.
These little guys just showed up here a couple of weeks ago. They’re the bird I most often see at work (apart from grackles and sea gulls) and they are delightful. They “fluff” themselves more than any bird I know!
It’s great to hear that you have active, visible green herons too. I look forward to their return each spring, along with egrets, which I haven’t yet seen. Both of those species, unlike the Great Blue Heron, leave my area for the winter.
He’s just a funky punk.
terrific shot, Mike!
Thanks, Sue.
