Are sparrows cute? Normally I don’t think of them as “cute,” but this Song Sparrow (Melospiza melodia) that I spotted hopping around earlier this week at Huntley Meadows Park was simply adorable.
I really like the simple white background provided by the snow and the organic shapes and texture of the small stumps that were sticking out of the frozen waters of the pond. Those simple elements add interest to the images without detracting from the main subject, the cute little sparrow.

Great photos. I say sparrows are CUTE ~ especially when they’re bathing in my birdbath.
I don’t think that I can manage to set up a birdbath, but I am wondering if I can put up a bird feeder in the back yard of my townhouse so that I can see these cute little birds more often.
Sparrows and finches are wonderful birds, and this is a delightful photo. As for the birdbath, I put about an 18″ clay saucer that’s made to go under plants on top of an old log on my balcony, and get to watch a variety of birds drinking and bathing. It’s only a couple of inches deep, and I wasn’t sure it would be large enough, but the birds seem happy.
I like the way you’ve created your own birdbath. I have a balcony on the back of my townhouse and I could probably fit an improvised birdbath like the one you use.
Great photos. I prefer a green background since I live in Florida, but in this case it is perfect. 🙂
I have a little sparrow that sits on the limb of a bush near our feeder and greets me each morning when I take the seeds out. They really are sweet little birds. Nice shots!!!.
Thanks, Rebecca. I totally agree that sparrows are sweet little birds that are too often ignored.
May we never overlook the common and ordinary critters that share our spaces. I also delight in making new studies of old, familiar friends like lthis. Though there may be a bit more detail in the bird in the last 3 images, I really prefer the first one. Verrry nice!
This actually looks like a painting Mike – great photo!
Photo 3 is my favorite.
The shots are gorgeous, the composition of natural materials makes your photo so engaging.
Nice to see you are able to get out Mike. Sometimes the ‘common’ little birds are all that is needed to brighten your day. My favourite is the first one. Nice texture in the stump as well as the bird.
What I call (on the other side of the Atlantic) sparrows are Passer domesticus, which look very similar. They are one of my favourite birds but the urban and rural populations have dropped by 71% since 1977. Your sparrows are cute too. Amelia
