The sky was overcast yesterday morning, the day of the Winter Solstice, but my spirits soared when I caught sight of a Bald Eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) high in the air over Huntley Meadows Park.
I was thrilled to be able to capture a sequence of shots that shows the eagle initially coming right at me and then gradually circling to a position that gave me a side view.

We have sighted bald eagles twice this year (central Indiana). They are a magnificent sight to behold! Great captures! What do you suppose his wingspan is?
Thanks. I’m guessing that the wing span is at least 6 feet or so. According to the Smithsonian, adult wingspans are from six and a half to seven and a half feet (https://nationalzoo.si.edu/Animals/Birds/Facts/fact-baldeagle.cfm).
It looks like he had you in his sights Mike. I guess you were a little too big to wrestle back to the nest 🙂 Great photos!
Thanks, Dan. A little bit afterwards, there were some vultures circling overhead. Maybe they thought the eagle had been successful.
Excellent images given the gray sky, but you know how to make the best of the conditions. Time to burn a fire to fuel the sun.
Magnificent — what beautiful shots of that wingspread on a full adult eagle. Well done.
Great sequence!
Wow so beautiful Mike, and hard to keep in focus when they are flying towards you!
A perfect start to any day!
