Sometimes the birds play games with me as I try to photograph them—usually it is “hide and seek.” This little Song Sparrow (Melospiza melodia), though, seemed to be playing “peekaboo,” as the bird would hide its head and then pop up and look at me, as if to announce, “Here I am.”

Maybe it thought with it being brown, it needed to do something to get your attention.
I think he was hoping the big, one eyed monster had gone.
Lovely photographs but all birds hide behind leaves and twigs any time I get near them with a camera. I don’t know how you get such great bird photographs.
Thanks. I wish there were a secret that I could share with you, but it’s mostly patience and persistence (and a lot of luck).
Bird photographs are so tricky, but you do a great job. Y’know what’s trickier than birds is butterflies….
Thanks. When the weather warms up, I’ll be switching my telephoto lens for my macro lens and will spend a lot of time chasing butterflies and other flying and crawling insects. They are a challenge to photograph most of the time, though occasionally they will sit still long enough for me to get decent shots.
Sparrows play visuality games a lot. They’ll hover in front of a window to get your attention, they’ll turn their heads and pretend not to watch what they are watching closely ( like me feeding an orphaned sparrow on my porch). Having raised several, I know that they pay attention to what you can see, and will seek your attention if they’re not afraid of you.
That’s really cool to hear. I sensed that the sparrow was aware of my presence, but didn’t know for sure if it was just my imagination.
