I don’t know where the male lions were this weekend when I visited the National Zoo, but there were three or four female lions and it was fun to watch them play together.
I tried to get a group photo, but they were about as cooperative as kids, with one of them turning her back and another sticking out her tongue.
After a while they seemed to get bored with me and I caught one of them in a big yawn.
I wanted very much to get an action photo, but the lions seemed content to lounge around together. This is the closest thing I got to an action photo. I like it a lot, even though it is not super sharp, primarily because of the body position and the angle of the shot.

That was really good. Are you an animal lover? (Just curious)
Thanks. Am I an animal lover? That’s a tough question to answer without a context. On the one hand, I am a meat-eating, leather-wearing person, so I am not a super vegan or political activist. On the other hand, I enjoy observing animals and had a dog for many years. In my photography, I have migrated toward nature photography and I spend hours and hours outdoors observing birds and insects and animals.
Well I REALLY am! I don’t eat meat or wear leather. Oh that sounds cool!!!!
I wonder if you heard them roar. These can be loud animals!
The female lions were pretty mellow and I didn’t hear them roar at all.
Really nice photos Mike, not the usual poses you see in most people’s photos.
Thanks, Sue. I noticed that I tended to spend a lot more time at the places I stopped at the zoo. So often, folks would stop for only a minute or two and then move on.
