I suddenly realized that all my photos of the Black Vultures that I posted were close-up shots. Here’s a shot of what two of them looked like when they were roosting in a tree. I really like the look of the tree, especially the branch on the right side. The sky was almost white today and the two vultures were virtually silhouettes. It’s kind of a creepy image—maybe I need to save it for Halloween next year.

They look like they are waiting for something to die.
That’s sure how it looks, although in this case, the death has already taken place. I think they are just taking a break from feeding on the nearby dead deer.
It’s a natural thing!
It reminds me of a cartoon scene … I googled it, thinking of Lion King ,but it turns out Vultures are featured in several Disney movies. Your black vultures are much more ominous looking than the somewhat comical looking Turkey Vultures where I live.
We have the turkey vultures too, but so far I have seen them only in the sky. They really are impressive looking when they are flying (though the short red head gives them the comical look that you described).
