I spotted this curious little White-tailed Deer (Odocoileus virginianus) on Monday at Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge. The deer appears to have moved out of the cute little Bambi phase and seemed more like a gawky adolescent to me (though I confess I know very little about deer development).
I like the fact that you can still see some of its white spots, which look to be a little faded.

Oh how cute is that? 🙂
The little deer was all on his own too. I worry a little as we move into autumn and then into winter. I suspect that deer have to grow up fast. 🙂
Yes, I guess so. I’ll post some deer shots soon. Stag with good antlers, his hind, and I think their grown young one. Saw them y’day as we went through a park near home that includes a small deer park. They’ve never been so close before so Nigel and were excited to see them!
Nice picture. He/she looks like it’s posing for you.
THose are some jumbo Bambi ears!
I am hoping the deer grows into those Bambi ears or otherwise he will look more like Dumbo than Bambi. 🙂
Awh!! This may be one of my very favorite shots that you have taken! 🙂 Gotta love Bambi!
dear mike, i cordially invite for you to sight my own dear deer tonight; a well-appointed stag with many good points, his pointless hind, and their perfectly poised youngster (who’s as pointless as her mother). Its only 8.50am here, post not scheduled till after midnight NZ-time 🙂
I will keep an eye out for your dear deer. 🙂
