As this male Northern Cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis) stared at me Monday from within a bush, I couldn’t help but wonder if he thought he was camouflaged. It is hard to hide that bright red color.

While sitting in my deer stands, I’ve learned to appreciate the cardinals. They give me something to watch and enjoy God’s world. The down side is that four of them bouncing around can sound like a deer!
I think it would be hard for me to stay in one place and watch and wait. When I have my camera with me, I prefer to wander. I often hear things moving about in the underbrush. Usually it is the the sparrows, cardinals, and other small birds, though occasionally it is something bigger like a wild turkey or an occasional deer.
He looks like he’s thinking: “Rats, I think that guy sees me…”
Fantastic photo! Benjamin thought this “poor bird is stuck in the branches” and was relieved when told that he was just trying to hide. Thank-you.
I think he does think he is camouflaged. They are so weary of us humans – aren’t they? But such a bright spot in our lives!
