The loud cries of an osprey (Pandion haliaetus) echoed though the early morning air yesterday at Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge. I was never able to figure out what was bothering the clearly unhappy osprey, but did manage to capture this image of the screaming bird just before it flew away.

That’s a beautiful capture, Mike!
I saw osprey screaming up on Mt. Lemmon after some of our monsoon storms and concluded like some other seabirds, it may have been caught on winds coming up from the Sea of Cortez. He was at the top of a tall dead ponderosa and too far away to photograph.
Wow. Tucson is definitely not the place that I would expect to find an osprey, but, as you suggest, the strong wind currents of this hurricane season can throw things (and birds) way off course.
Fantastic shot!! I love Ospreys. I think they are just so beautiful. I had to go all the way to Florida to find some since I don’t see them often in Virginia (near me).
Thanks. Where I live in Northern Virginia, we are not too far from the Potomac River, so it is not too hard to find ospreys, until they fly away for the winter.
I’m very close to Potomac as well but not in an area where they seem to fly. I do see eagles often though. I saw an osprey at Lake Accotink though! 🙂
