It is already June, but today I thought I would post an image of a striking May flower that I photographed late last month. Some of you know that I don’t have my own garden, though I am trying to grow some flowers in my yard this year. I generally have to rely on the garden of one of my neighbors, my photography mentor Cindy Dyer, for beautiful flowers to shoot.
I stopped by her house on the day when her first red day lily opened up. More of them are blooming now, but there is always something special about the first one. I love the rich red color of this particular variety of lily. When I was growing up in Massachusetts. my Mom had some orange tiger lilies that appeared each year that she especially loved. This lily, of course, is a different color, but somehow it brought back memories of my departed Mom.

Wow! That was a nice choice, Mike. Kudos to Cindy for growing that puppy.
Thanks Dan. This past weekend she was out planting some bulbs for flowers that are supposed to attract hummingbirds and butterflies, so I will continue to check out her garden regularly.
Love that shade of red
Thanks, Robert. I too love the color and was happy I was able to capture it–sometimes digital sensors have trouble with certain colors, so it’s not always to capture the colors as I remembered them in the moment.
Do you ever use film?
I occasionally shoot black and white film (and have about a dozen rolls in my refrigerator right now). It’s been a long time since I last shot color film. I still have quite a number of film cameras, including a couple of twin lens reflex cameras that I bought a couple of years ago that I have yet to try out.
I have a photographer friend who collects old cameras and still uses film, she even made a dark room in her house. One of my short stories, Vanishing Act, is about an amateur photographer who swears by film.
Beautiful color! Your narrative reminds me of my mother, who loved purple irises.
