Summer days are drifting away and the biological clocks are almost certainly ticking loudly for some dragonflies. This past weekend at Meadowlark Botanical Gardens in Vienna Virginia, I spotted these two Halloween Pennant dragonflies (Celithemis eponina) engaged in a little summer loving.
It’s hard not to feel a little bit like a voyeur as I move in closer to photograph the acrobatic intertwining of the tiny dragonfly bodies. Summer loving happens so fast and soon my colorful little friends will be gone for the season,

Lovely shots as always. I love the use of bokeh to add shimmer to the background.
Thanks, Laura. The shiny highlights are not really something that I strive for, but they do happen sometimes when shooting almost directly into the light and in some cases add a cool “disco” effect to the shots.
I am rather a fan of bokeh in the appropriate context and they really seemed effective in this image.
Stunning photos!
Thanks, Brigitte.
Some really great shots; the detail is just amazing, and yes I do appreciate the title.
Thanks, Charlie. I threw in a few references to the song from Grease and wondered if anyone would catch them.
Nice shots. I haven’t seen a single pennant dragonfly this season but that doesn’t mean they aren’t here.
I like your approach, Allen. There is so much that happens all around us of which we are unaware. Some mornings I arrive early on the boardwalk at my local marsh and see all kinds of paw prints and wonder what goes on there under the cover of darkness.
Great capture Mike.
I still get a headache thinking about the way a male grabs the female at the back of her head with those fearsome pincers.
It’s pretty brutal, Sue, and you can sometimes see females with scratches and scars from the process.
